"Give me your gossamer wings
To stretch over gnarled roots
As Birch bark binds the entrance
Down in the crooked wood
I descend..." - Of Moths and Phantom Queens, Joey Morris, Songs of Shades 3
Badb in the Birch wood anointing Spell Oil is the refinement of the Bone Birch energy, in order to deepen the energetic matrix as well as create a more complex and evocative scent.
Within the Ulster text The Wooing of Emer, there is made mention of the "Wood of Badb," a tantalising descriptor that hints at the possibility of Sacred Groves used in worship to The Phantom Queen.
Within The book of The Great Queen by Morpheus Ravenna describes a grove sacred to Baduhenna who she calls "a likelycognate of Badb." (p196.)
For my part, I have always found groves to be sacred, and the Silver Birch, with its folklore roots attached to Death and Rebirth, to be a primary guardian of the Otherworld.
The connection seems largely to be personal gnosis though there are references to banshees in Silver Birch lore.
Badb in the Birch wood creates an energetic matrix to transport you to a liminal woodland within a Sacred Grove.
It evokes the energy of a place of utter calm and silence, just after a storm - The trees are drenched in water and their leaves fragrant, the ground wet and cold, the undergrowth rustles with life barely within ear shot, but within the grove itself... stillness.
Badb walks this grove, watchful, her eyes expressive - this is a place of Death and Rebirth.
The beauty of this anointing spell oil is that it creates sanctuary for personal rituals of connecting to Badb, and rebirthing yourself from the old versions of you.
Helichrysum, the "everlasting," is a wonderful spell energy that teaches us about the immortal nature of the soul and regeneration, as well as faciliating communication with Spirits.
Coupled with different tree energies but in particular Silver Birch, this smudge is a wondrous matrix of supportive rebirth in a sacred Grove.
This is the place I describe travelling to in Death of a Woods Witch:
"I find myself at the centre, the clearing, surrounded by the circle of trees.
"Here I have come again to die," I whisper, and step over the threshold.
The air ripples and the energy lifts from the soil, electric and humming with my every step, as I ascend the stone altar, feeling its weight beneath me.
It greets me in memory and knowing, for this is no virgin death, and I lay down, my eyes streaming with the sadness of it all.
"They hurt me," I say, and it all rushes outwards. "I know," says the Witch of my Soul, "And the Knife beckons."
I open my eyes and watch her then, this reflection of me robed in shadow and star, as arms outstretched she chants the ancient words of endings. It is time, I know, for this ending, and I mourn for all that is lost. She strikes, quick and true, plunging it into my heart.
It is done, And we are One again."
