The Blodeuwedd spell range has been a journey in faith. The candles are fragranced with magnolia, it is the main scent in the spell matrix, and the amulet is made from it.
 
I found out today: Magnolias are however one of the most primitive plants in evolutionary history and fossil records show that magnolias once existed in Europe, North America and Asia over 100 million years ago. -Caerhays
 
In addition: Its legacy as the “mother” of all flowering plants speaks to its tenacity, strength and enduring beauty.
I wasn’t sure when Blodeuwedd (a flower goddess) insisted on magnolias - but there it is. You listen when a Goddess speaks. The mother of all flowers who endures.
 
Magnolia also has associations with reconciliations with lovers - so I like to think when She flew into the otherworld as an owl to reconcile with Gronw (her love), the magnolias bloomed around them.
 
Goddess Blodeuwedd’s story is one that provokes an emotional response in my very core.
It’s telling makes out that this Goddess, created out of magick and flowers (well, Oak, Broom, and Meadowsweet) was some kind of villain for not prostrating herself to the husband for whom she was “made” - that being Lleu.
 
In the Mabinogion, She is created by the magicians Math and Gwydion to be the wife of Lleu Llaw Gyffes, but falls in love with Gronw, and the pair conspire to kill Lleu. They fail - and the “hero” slays Gronw and Blodeuwedd is turned into an owl (an ill omen to the Welsh.)
 
I personally feel the Christian patriarchy might as well be holding the stick and poking us loudly with it from this version of events.
If we consider the combination of herbs used in magick to create Blodeuwedd - they are all powerful, and allude to the eventual fate of Llew. He would be the sacrifice, in order to be reborn - he would be wounded. His tale of Sovereignty is also Hers - something that he denies her by transforming Her into an Owl.
 
I like to think that the magic that wove Blodeuwedd into an owl actually freed her - as a creature that could visit her beloved in the world of the dead, her hearts desire was actually granted in the end.
 
Sometimes our path to sovereignty is long and arduous, and at first we are entirely denied what it is we want most in the world. Other people always seem to have ideas and plans for us, but we must learn to reject the narratives and conditioning (that almost becomes the fabric of who we are) in order to be free.
 
This is the core lesson of Blodeuwedd for me - that She rejected flowers for feathers and took her life back in the end... even if She had to grow wings to do it.
