I had to make it extra witchy for you guys this Autumn!!!
One of the names for the Otherworld was Eamhain Ablach - the realm of Apples.
There is also a connection to the Isle of Avalon - Yns Avallach - the Isle of Apples - a magical isle that Arthur was taken to for his immortal rest after his death. Some consider this a liminal space or entrance to the Otherworld in itself.
Add to this that in Ireland, apples were buried with the dead as well as turning up in mythology that would grant access to the Otherworld (or brought the Otherworld to the realm of the living,) and you have some strong necromantic / witchcraft ties to the tree and its fruit:
To enter the Otherworld before the appointed hour marked by death, a passport was often necessary, and this was usually a silver branch of the sacred apple-tree bearing blossoms, or fruit, which the queen of the Land of the Ever-Living and Ever-Young gives to those mortals whom she wishes for as companions; though sometimes, as we shall see, it was a single apple without its branch. - sacred-texts

In the Irish myths and legends, the sea God Mannanan Mac Lir is reputed to live on an island known sometimes as Emhain Abhlach – the Place of Apples, another name for the fabled isle of Avalon.
There are a great many myths surrounding Mannanan Mac Lir, but Cormac's Adventure in the Land of Promise features apple and its connection to the Otherworld:
In Cormac's Adventure in the Land of Promise, there is again a magic silver branch with three golden apples on it:--
'One day, at dawn in May-time, Cormac, grandson of Conn, was alone on Múr Tea in Tara. He saw coming towards him a sedate (?), grey-headed warrior. . . . A branch of silver with three golden apples on his shoulder. Delight and amusement to the full was it to listen to the music of that branch, for men sore wounded, or women in child-bed, or folk in sickness, would fall asleep at the melody when that branch was shaken.'
In Irish lore, the God Óengus offered three miraculous apple trees from the magical woods, Bruig na Bóinde (New Grange), as a wedding gift for the one of the Milesians. One was in full bloom, one shedding its blossoms, and one in fruit.
In one Irish myth, a Sidhe, or fey maiden falls in love with a mortal and sings her love to him. She is chased off by his father’s men, but before she departs, she throws him an apple. The apple is fairy food and is ever-renewing. The fruit alone sustains the mortal for a year, until she returns on her crystal ship and they sail to the Otherworld together.
In another Irish myth, through trickery, two lovers are kept apart and die. On the grave of the maiden an apple tree grows. On her lover’s grave, many miles away, a Yew tree sprouts. The trees grow and bend longingly toward on another for seven year. Then the trees are cut down by bards and all the stories of love and romance that ever fell from lips were carved upon wooden tablets made from the trees. Eventually these tablets found their way to the hands of the high king of Tara. When the love tablets were side by side, they sprang into each others arms, becoming as deeply entwined as the branches of an ancient tree. - honeybeewild

In The Voyage of Bran, an Otherworldly woman appears with an apple branch laden with bells, entrancing Bran with wondrous tales of the Otherworld. So enraptured is he by this damsel with the magical apple branch, that he sets sail immediately for the enchanted shores, having epic adventures on his journey. (Blamires, page 142)
