One of the major defining characteristics of the path of the Hedge witch is to go "hedge-riding" which is described as the spirit of the witch taking flight outside of the body, and travelling through other realms of existence. This is done with ample protections in place to protect the witch, and for discovering secrets of the mysteries of our world, communing with spirits and receiving magical information.
 
Spirit gate provides a physical anchor to this realm to assist opening up the gate to hedge riding and a place to return to.
 
I crafted this solo candle with a Witch figure connecting to a skull with the same mugwort and birch tar steeped soy wax as the tapers.

I’m obsessed with birch tar, and long has Birch root descended me into the Underworld, guided me and guarded me through all of my death cycles and connected me to Badb.
Mugwort is the herb of the seers. Unlocking our second sight and flying with us along the hedge
Wormwood has been burnt for spirit communion for centuries, and can be used to banish them too. It always makes me think of graveyards and liminal death spaces.
 
★ Birch tar in Witchcraft - Birch has always been at the entrances to the Otherworld for me; it takes me on liminal journeys. It has traditionally been used for new beginnings, cleansing spaces of negativity be it energies or spirits, birch tar specifically has a history of being used as an adhesive - making it ideal in spells to bind things together.
 
★ Wormwood in Witchcraft - to increase psychic powers, give one the gift of foresight, used to remove anger, stop war, inhibit violent acts, and for protection from the evil eye.

★ Mugwort in Witchcraft - is the seer of the herb world - its spirit bestows second sight and unlocking prophetic wandering within the spiral of your psyche.
As we begin to turn inward in the dark half of the year we hear the call of the witch ways again - asking us to reclaim our power & magick. Mugwort flies us there on its silver wings.
